The Artisan process for making our beautiful copper sinks starts by melting down recycled copper (plumbing pipes, electrical wires, etc.) and then pouring the liquid copper into molds in order to create copper sheets. The size and the thickness of these copper sheets depend on the size, design and thickness of the final copper sink to be produced. Our artisans start heating (keeping the copper malleable) and repeatedly hammering these sheets to the specified sink shape and design until a truly handcrafted work of art is created.
To produce the final finish the surface of the sink is then treated to accelerate the copper aging patina, this process is called “patinado” and it is done under heat giving the surface of the copper basin its characteristic color and durability. Depending on how often the copper piece is heated and cooled, the metal oxidizes and the patina ranges from a deep rich red to a copper brown. However, the finish can be left just as natural. The master artisans work carefully to create a particular shade that gives their work a distinctive finish. An artisan works on a piece over a series of days and in some cases weeks.
Copper is man’s oldest metal, dating back more than 10,000 years and this tradition of copper crafts and artwork has been handed down from generation to generation by the families of our artisans since 1538. Our copper sinks and tubs are created entirely by hand using the same ancient “martillado” (hammered) technique; a typical sink takes up to 25,000 hammer strikes. Due to our handcrafted process each piece is unique and one of a kind reflecting their own character, tonality and consistency of the hammer mark indentations.
Copper sinks are more sanitary than most other basin materials, because copper is a natural antibacterial product. Science has shown that bacteria can live for days on a stainless steel surface, but for only a matter of hours on copper. Copper is non-porous and very resistant to bacteria.
The thickness in these works of art is measured in Gauge numbers. The lower the number the thicker the piece; a gauge 14 piece will be much thicker than a gauge 18 piece.
We are environmentally friendly and we recycle both the copper and wood used as a source of energy. We do our best to ensure that our copper sinks are created in an eco friendly and sustainable way.
At Artesano Copper Sinks we offer 4 types of beautiful finishes:
- Our most popular finish is the Café Viejo and is primarily dark to medium brown with black hues. (Best matching faucet & drain finish is Oil Rubbed Bronze)
- Our exclusive Fuego has golden and copper tones. This finish is generally applied in circular motions. (Best matching faucet & drain finish is Antique Copper)
- Our Natural finish is the most rustic and versatile copper sink finish. It is truly unique; with orange, black , brown and reddish tones. (Best matching faucet & drain finish is Oil Rubbed Bronze or Fired Copper)
- Our Satin Nickel is a custom finish and is only build to order. (Best matching faucet & drain finish is Satin Nickel)
Copper in general and in particular the finishes of our copper sinks are very simple to maintain since they do not show fingerprints as stainless steel or shiny copper does. Our products will progressively develop a gorgeous patina overtime; they will become a richer/darker color. As your copper sink ages, it will adopt its own character and unique look.
The way to keep your copper basin in optimal condition is to keep it clean by wiping it down after each use with a soft cloth. For basic cleaning, simply use a mild soap and warm water. Other cleaners are not necessary. Do not use harsh abrasives or copper cleaners. For extra protection, products such as Renaissance Wax, Flitz Faucet and Fixture Wax may be applied to the copper surface periodically. These seals will help maintain the luster of the copper and provide better water runoff.
Our Café Viejo, Natural and Fuego finishes will all naturally continue to patina over time, meaning they will become more beautiful and darker in color. If acidic items such as lemons, vinegar, ketchup, or red wine sit on these finishes for an extended period of time, the finish may be altered but since copper is a living metal it will heal, or re- patina itself over time, often in a matter of days.
Our Satin Nickel finish (also called Brushed Nickel) is accomplished by plating nickel over copper and then meticulously hand-brushing the piece. This finish is also very easy to maintain. If acidic items are left on the nickel finish for extended periods of time they may leave a slight dark mark, but this is easily removed with any brand of “No.7 Chrome Polish” that can be found at hardware stores.
We guarantee you will love your new copper sink and that it will remain the feature piece in any room for years to come!

Outlined below are only some of the many benefits of copper sinks:
Antibacterial Properties – Research has shown that copper sinks help combat and kill dangerous bacteria such as E.coli and more. While deadly bacteria can live for up to month on a stainless steel surface copper has been shown to wipe them out completely in less than 14 hours. This is because of the natural density of copper – it does not have the microscopic crevices and pits for bacteria to hide in. Scientists belive that an increased use of copper in things like kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks and even park benches can significantly reduce the chances of bacterial infection in our population.
Easy Maintenance – Your handmade copper sinks is just as easy to maintain as any stainless steel sink. Just wipe it down with soap and water for a great clean. If you prefer to shine your sink it can be waxed with an easy to find copper wax every six months to help maintain its luster. Over time copper develops a beautiful patina look that is very popular. Harsh chemicals can damage or erase this patina and are not advised for use in cleaning your copper sink.
Eco Friendly – Every Artesano Copper Sink is handmade using recycled copper. This copper is melted and heated over an old fashioned wood fire then hand hammered into its perfect shape. Artesano Copper Sinks cares about the environment and does everything possible to protect it. We put our feeling about protecting the environment ahead of profits and ensure that all of our products are produced with the lowest possible emissions and in a sustainable way.
Handmade by Master Artisans – Each copper sink we product is an original, handmade work of art.
